In some Romance languages (those with a Latin route) such as Portuguese and Spanish, “Professor” is not just the prestigious academic but also every teacher in the educational system: “professor(a)” is “teacher” in both Spanish and Portuguese. I am an English Teacher but I am not a Professor of English. At least, not yet.

I have a lifetime of experiences working in the language service provider sector. The sound of the typewriter lingers in my memory like a sort of strange lullaby and engine.
I guess that will come as the weirdest of similes. It is perfectly clear to me.
When I was a kid, my grandfather and his brother both, worked as translators. Their work often took over the whole family and one of my earliest, and warmest, memories is falling asleep to the sound of electric typewriters as my mother, sister and aunt worked through the night to finish the final draft of the latest urgent project. That was the beginning: I wanted to be a part of that.
Learning, translating, teaching and, now, even interpreting are just different expressions of the same thing: myself.

Reading takes you places. Reading also improves your foreign language skills. Extensive Reading is an approach to reading in a foreign language with the focus being on enjoyment and not on studying.
There is a large industry dedicated to graduated reading. These are books written specifically for learners of the language. Some books are adapted versions of well-known works of literature, others are new contemporary and/or inspirational texts.
In the book club, we aim to encourage reading as part of the learning journey. Using graduated reading books as the starting points, over a few weeks, we learn some aspects of the language, work on pronunciation and talk about the book and our experience with it. Hopefully you will soon be reading the full original version of these books.
